Spring and Dunrovin’ Milestones

My wife attacks Reed Lake in her new Kayak.  No new records were broken, but she did manage to remain upright for her maiden voyage around the lake.  She was joined by her good friend Marilyn, who has traversed this lake for about 5 yrs. and is an expert kanoest.

While Jole was rowing the lake, I was busy with the construction of my new shop.  After much deliberation it was decided that the shop would be built on the back of the existing garage — even though the build required it to be constructed on posts over a small drop-off.

I can only tell you that Dunrovin’ has added a jewel in the crown in the form of my new shop.  It is perched on a hill overlooking the lake and has an 180 degree view of nature that would give a naturalist goose bumps!

Honestly, I cannot claim credit for most of its construction, but I did help.  My contractor had to charge me a little extra for my assistance, but he didn’t lose his sense of humor over the process.

Jole insisted that our boat the “Knot a Yacht” be placed in the front of our house in order to enhance the home’s curb appeal.  This is the delivery truck bringing me 12 yards of gravel to creat a resting place for the boat when it is at home.  Frankly, the craft is so large this was the only flat spot on our property that allows for entry and exit.

To prove that there are fish in the lake, I entered the annual “fishing derby” and did catch 5 beautiful trout.  I am a member of the catch-and-release club, so they will live to fight another day ( all but one that died, so I ate him).

I got my little Jon boat all set up with my power bait, my rod & reel, and the troll motor.  I putted down the lake (actually electric motors just sort of purr like a cat).  After about a distance of two blocks I noticed that my friend Gary had a fire going in his fire pit and it was sort of cold and rainy.  He offered a place in front of the fire and a beer.  I spent the rest of the derby there with my bait tossed into the water at the end of his dock.  We really enjoyed the day and both did quite well.  All I got of Gary’s catch was his butt.  Just as I got ready to take a picture for posterity, all I got was his posterior.  He dropped his huge fish and shall be just a memory.  Too bad, his children would have been proud of his efforts.  The fire and the beer was wonderful and the day shall remain a fond memory for me … just not for Gary.

I mentioned milestones in this chapter’s title.  Well, we had the pleasure of hosting my brother-in-law’s 75th birthday party.  He insists that his was his first 75th birthday party, so I will take him at his word.  It is hard to tell much about the cake from this shot, but it is a heart shape with a battery-lighted model of “Superman”.  That he is.  He is probably in better shape than most of the people I know in their sixty’s!

This is the Knot a Yacht in the canvas shop.  They guy in the cap Greg)  is in the process of adding canvas and vinyl to the top and upholstery in the interior.  As I mentioned, this boat is sort of a “fixer” that will require a lot of work.  We may not even get it into the water this summer because of our upcoming trip East to visit family and friends.   We are turning this boat into a Northwestern craft.  I expect to have the boat back this next week and will show you its new look in my next chapter.

This was one of our new visitors this Spring.  He has a mate somewhere in the local forest and they visit daily to sample the suet and seeds.  I had to shoo him away last week…..he decided to test my new shop for grubs!!!  We also have  a mating pair of regular redheaded woodpeckers that decided to pick the dead cedar tree outside of our livingroom window.  There a lots of critters that call Dunrovin’ home.  I thought it was going to rain, so I started to go down to the dock and bring in my troll motor and battery.  It seems that raccoons will make daytime appearances at any time.  I make it a point not to get too close as these guys can be a bit crotchety and decide that I am not friendly.  I am trying a new version of the webb blog and it has a mind of its own.  I tried to add these two pictures of the interior of my shop, but I have no idea of how they will ultimately be viewed.  I have a rather eclectic collection of tools, many of which have been willed me by friends.  Some I have carted around the country and packed away.  I was amazed at how many tools that I really did have.  It will take a few years for me to really create the shop I envisioned.

Jole has spent may hours creating focal points in our yard.  perhaps you can see the log in the background…this was a hollowed-out log that has been a part of our backyard for many years.  Jole has planted it with a variety of perrinials and it is a work of art.  In the foreground is a round accent planting that is right in the center of our backyard between the house and the lake.   It really is a camouflaged cover for our septic system.  Yes, it’s a little like putting earrings on a pig, I suppose.  But who would know?  It’s a thing of beauty now.  In my in-basket, Jole has placed a request to add a few items to the round to add flavor.  I will reserve this for a later chapter.

That’s all for now and we will keep you posted.  There are lots of plans for the next couple of months and we are having a ball here.

    Hey Bill and Jole-
Can’t tell you how very much we love hearing about real life. Of course, we enjoy your photos alot. It is almost, not really, like being there-would rather see it all in person!! So glad you are having a great time together exploring this planet Earth!
    Miss you lots-
    Love,
    Sue and Bob

You guys just need to figure out how to steal a week and come North. It is a really different lifestyle, but probably not unlike the place you used to have in Lk. Arrowhead. We miss you and Bob.

Hello Bill and Jole: I just love reading your blog. I see myself looking around your property and enjoying the transformation and dreams coming to life. We can’t wait to see you in June and getting all the news. I love what Jole is doing with the gardens, very insightful.
Keep catching those fish Bill, when we’re there next time we can have a fish bake.
Hugs from Toronto and looking forward to seeing you both.

You were supposed to see it before our trip there. But, it will still be here when you can make it back to see us this winter or next Spring. We are anxious to see Toronto and surrounds. The railroad excursion sounds like fun, as does seeing Niagara. Jole has not seen either one and she really gets a kick out of exploring new vistas. I look forward to traveling through Canada to get to your place. Neither of us has seen Canada and this should be fun traversing the Northern terrain via Rt. 3. We’re told it is just beautiful.

Wow!! I don’t know which amazed us the most..Jole kayaking, the boat size or the workshop (what engineering!) Take lots of pics while the shop and tools are still clean and shiny (they don’t stay that way).

Only sad note is that you are traveling East not South!

    Love you, Connie and Jim

No more pictures! You have to come see for yourself!!! Well, O.K., I will continue to take pictures and do my blog. Jole really likes the kayak and she handles it quite well. Can you see why she loves it here? The shop will be lots of fun for me — it’s been a dream of my for years. Only now, people will expect me to actually build something useful. The heat will be on me.!

As for the boat —- that will be a new chapter for us. There are a hundres islands to explore, and dozens of interesting marinas to visit, not to mention the possibility of perhaps going into Canadian waters and North to Alaska. I really need to develop confidence in my seamanship before I venture too far from home. I am up to the challenge though. I will not have enough summer left to do much this year. I forgot to mention in my blog that we added a real potty to the boat — to allow for longer trips — in comfort!

Carl Sandberg once said, “nothing happens-but first a dream”! I believe you have put that into practice…I can see, that you have. Now, the world will expect some marvelous new inventions-done in your very own shop.

One of my best friends, Joseph, is an inventor, and has 2 patents going-so even today there are new ideas a float!

Sorry, there were no photos of Jole. The kayak one, was too far to make her out. I did not realize that you, Jole, were such a nature lady. Good for you-a better life style, for longer, better living!

      Hi Yve,

Yes, sorry no short range photos of me allowed. Just kidding, I do love to be out in nature but Bill is more of an observer so he is usually taking pictures of me from afar. I could never have settled in a city once I stopped working as I love to be outside. Where we live now is like having a park all to myself and I couldn’t be happier. You and Bill are alike in that you both love the sun and the heat. I however love the cool mountains, lakes and streams. That is why we built the shop and had a canvas enclosure put on the boat so Bill could be happy in the Pacific Northwest. He really wanted to move to Florida and I know now I would never have been happy there – too hot and humid for me. I’d be stuck inside most of the time with the air conditioner.

We are in Harrisburg, PA today visiting with Jim’s son and 4 grandchildren (16,14,11 & 9). We will be here for another week then on to Salt Lake City for the wedding. We hope to be home by the morning of July 26.

Hope all is well in your world. You haven’t told me why you are thinking of moving permanently out of Mexico. I thought you loved it there and were only keeping the house in California for the children? None of my business really, just curious.

      Hugs, Jole*

    Hi Bill and Jole,
For whatever reason, I’m just now reading this blog entry. And loving it!!Bill, you’re such a good writer and I just love hearing all about you and Jole and your wonderful PNW digs. I hear you’re heading across Canada and then down through PA and god-knows-where-else on an extended road trip that sounds super. Have fun and travel safely. Hope you’ll post along the way.
    XO
    Peggy

    Hi Peggy,

I am very much behind in my blog updates. Perhaps I will have a little time when I visit my son in Harrisburg, Pa. Canada was super and we just arrived in Pa. last night. I will try to do a better job.

    Good hearing from you.

    Hi Bill & Jole,
Decided to check your blog to see if there were any updates. I thought you were back home and called, etc. I now know it will be about the 26th. Salt Lake City is really close to Southern California you know! Would love to have you come this way!!!
Looks like we are getting a new Puppy in September. Jim has already named him “Deuce”. Yeah, as in Coupe.
Jim has his hand in more projects than you can believe but you have got to see the Well!! I will take some photos.
His guy at the shop keeps trying to get him to take stuff from there to home and I keep trying to get him to take stuff to the shop!
Our neighbors went yard saling with us; don’t know who had more fun. They are hooked; I was the only one ready to go home.
Love you much, Connie and Jim

Yes, I have not been doing the blog on this trip. Don’t know why — was just curious to see how many viewed and were disappointed, I guess. I did have enough though to convince me that I need a new chapter. However, we have Jole’s PC and I am not as familiar with it as I am with my own (how’s that for an excuse?).

Glad to hear Jim is really into the car thing. That’s great. Yeah, it time for a “deuce” in your lives.
