SUMMER’S END – Dunrovin’

Summer has wound down, so we decided to gather the neighborhood and Jole’s Book Club cronies together for a BBQ cookout.  Even with the light rain it was a tremendous success.  Hot dogs, cheeseburgers and Margaritas.

Steven & Diane

Just a few days before our Memorial Day BBQ, we had our good friends from Carmel, Ca. visit for a few days.  Diane and Steve are new residents there, having moved from Southern California last year.  We palled around together when we both lived in California.  Jole and Steve had been business friends and later, good personal friends for over 20 years.

DSC02779 With fall fast approaching, it is the harvest season here in Western Washington.  One of the first events was the Whatcom County Fair.

The picture on the left is of poor quality, but was my photo of the news article that appeared in the local newspaper.  When we took our guests to the fair, a calf was born while we were in attendance, and the event was so unusual that they thought it was newsworthy.

This past weekend, we took Jim and Gaye (Jole’s sister and brother-in-law) on the annual farm tour.  This is not to be missed and it was our second tour.  If you like to learn how to milk cows, eat hot corn on the cob, pet the goats and calves, have a fresh fruit sundae, and see all the fruits of the year’s harvests — this tour is special.

This is a picture of the four of us at “Mama’s Garden” in Acme, Washington, about 8 miles from home.  As you can see – it is not raining.

We have to put up with a lot of ribbing over this rainy weather tag WA enjoy.  So what? if I have webbed feet.  My distance swimming is much improved.

On the right is my charming bride showing off two varieties of Washington apples at the Bellwood Acres farm in local Lynden, WA.  Twisted S Bison Ranch

We stopped at Twisted S Bison Ranch to shoot the bull and chew the fat with the staff there.  Ughhh! It reminded me of a previous departure from what I knew to be right on a cable TV contracting gig,  when my work buddies goaded me into having a bison burger for lunch.  I was always convinced that the restaurant had switched the meat for a chunk of Annie Oakley’s original saddle!!!

Boxx Berry Farm

Without a doubt, our favorite stop was at the Boxx Berry Farm.  This is by far the areas best marketed farm.  Essentially, it is a produce market.  The owner is a smart cookie.  He has created a huge playground for kids, and has a John Deere tractor pulling 12 barrel carts complete with one kid per cart.  This is the place that greets you with a berry sundae and hot corn on the cob.   My kind of place.

Insulation

As fall approaches, I am getting ready for the cooler weather.  Just getting around to insulating my shop.  I did get my propane stove installed a few days ago.  It’s an ancient Empire stove that I located last year on Craig’s list.  It does the job — just a bit big & ugly.

I just figured out how much bird food that my critters go through each month.  It staggers the imagination.  I have tried to wean them a little.

I have even resorted to “challenges” like  having them eat from the wrong type of feeder for jays.   They will just have to learn that Jole and I are now senior citizens on a fixed income —- will just have to tighten their belts too.

Your enjoyment is thanks enough for my doing this blog. It’s good therapy for me too. Give Pat a big hug and tell him that it is time to visit us.

    Hi Bill & Jole -
Oh how I do enjoy these postings! Makes me want to come visit again :-)
Glad you’re getting the insulation done on your workshop……it’ll be critical in a month or two I bet.
You don’t want your bird friends to get too fat anyway – lol

    Miss you both!!
    love,
    Pat (& David)

I’m glad you like my blog chapters. Our life is really mundane, my blogs are sprinkled with a lot of “poetic license.”

    Hi Bill & Jole,
Love getting your blogs. You two know how to live, it seems you fill every moment with quality. Your life certainly isn’t “mundane” as you said above. Seems to me its stellar. (no pun intended). Scott’s working on setting up his new workshop in Las Vegas. He proudly just showed me his torque wrench (which he says he’ll probably never use!). We’re loading up the car with workshop stuff, a new color laser printer, a suitcase loaded with clothes for the cruise we’re taking next week, and a cooler with refrigerated stuff that needs to go with us to Las Vegas. That little Prius will be fully loaded. We’re flying to Ft. Lauderdale for the cruise from Las Vegas. Its a 7 day cruise in the Caribbean. Then its back to Las Vegas and our new second home, Scott is always sad when it becomes time to leave & go back to California. Just returned from So Carolina. I need a blog to show you the pictures we took! Just never get around to setting one up. Will send some in an email. Love to you both,
    Estelle & Scott

Make sure when you set up your blog to remember to let people know that you have posted a new chapter. Otherwise, it is like watching snow on a black & white TV :>) I have even suggested that they add my blog to their favorites, in case they miss the email. I am pleased that you enjoy the blogs. They are fun to write, although my blog chapters have tamed down a lot since I am not traveling as much now.

Howdy Bill & Jolie: Luv the pix about the produce and food,Connie and I like to do those same tours in SC.That workshop is really looking good! We got our Samoyed puppy (DEUCE COUPE) and man is he bundle of energy. Wish I could get an infusion of that energy! Looks to me like the Lakers are enjoying there summer vacation a little too much, going to be interesting to see if there is the fire for a third ring. You must have gotten a bad buffalo burger that meat cooked right is really great and 0 cholestrol. Great to hear from you guys, keep those cards and letters coming, Jim&Connie

Thanks for the comments. Deuce Coupe huh? It sounds like you have cross-bred your hobby with your autos. Your pup will have a devil of a time trying to spell his own name! I guess that the dog spells the doom of a trip North. Oh well, you will just have to read my blog and die of envy. :>)
